Homemade Sunscreen

– Scroll down for English version –

Hjemmelavet solcreme (faktor 30)

50 ml tiosol (kan købes i de fleste helsekostbutikker)
100 ml kokosolie

– ENGLISH –

The choice between either to be getting a sunburn or adding synthetic chemicals (aka. sunscreen) to my skin has always been a difficult dilemma to me. Both are incredibly unhealthy and harmful. Too much sun is bad, but sunscreen certainly is too!

Sunscreens are full of with chemicals, additives and other harmful substances which have harmful effects, not least on our hormonal balances. Over the past years many sunscreens have become healthier and thereby contain fewer harmful substances. Unfortunately though, I have not yet be able to find a sunscreen completely free from unwanted ingredients. Most of the unwanted ingredients are even unnecessary since they only ensure a certain color, consistency and durability – all three factors that I personally prefer to compromise for more health.
A good sunscreen must, however, protect against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, which requires a sunscreen, which unfortunately can not be obtained naturally. So, if the choice is between sunburn or sunscreen, I think that the least harmful option is sunscreen when we are talking skin damage, skin cancer etc.
Obviously, one solution to the problem is to stay out of the sun during the worst hours (11-15), wear light clothing and hat plus staying in the shade. Most days, this is not a problem, but when I’m on vacation, I must admit that I am too much of a sun-lover to comply with it. I LOVE sunbathing, and it’s a big part of my pleasure and joy of traveling to (I think most of us feel this way). The sun is healthy but too much sun is not.
I believe that when we expose your skin to unnaturally high amounts of sun, like when we sunbath on holidays, we must also make use of unnatural sun filter. But all the other unnecessary chemicals that only promote a specific color, texture, etc., are not something that I am willing to put on my skin.
What to do, then?
My best solution to the problem so far is to make my own sunscreen, which ONLY contains the sun filter in itself and not all the other unnecessary chemicals. Again, the sun filter is unnatural and is not free from unhealthy ingredients. The sun filter, which is called tiosol, consists of Carthamus Tinctorius Seed OilTitanium DioxideAluminaPolyhydroxystearic Acid and SilicaSo, I cannot call my sunscreen healthy but it is the less harmful alternative that I have found (if you know a better one I would love to hear about in the comments below).

Homemade Sunscreen (SPF 30)

50 ml tiosol (can be found in most health stores)
100 ml coconut oil
– Mix the ingredients and add it to a container. I recommend a container with a pump.
My best health advice is to avoid sunscreen and sunburn completely and I try to do this myself as far as possible. This sunscreen is the best possible solution, though, on the days you cannot stay away from the sun.
P.S. My first concern about making my own sunscreen was whether or not it would even work. I can tell you it does. I have been using this myself this entire summer, both while sunbathing in Denmark and Italy. I did not get one single sun burn, which I have actually experienced to get while using other sunscreens..
