Maybe You’re Not Depressed But “Just” Burned Out

– Scroll down for English version –

Nej! Jeg var ved at blive udbrændt. Læs mere om min historie HER.

Hvordan bliver man udbrændt?

Her oplever du sygdom og symptomer.

– ENGLISH –

Your alarm clock rings. You feel tired. You’ve hardly slept because it took forever to fall asleep. Only the idea of a cup of coffee gets you up. You are hungry and crave things like bread, cakes and anything that gives you quick energy. You are irritable. You are fight with your partner. You go for a long rund in the gym and feel completely exhausted. You do not glow. You look sad and unhealthy.

Recognize any? If so it does not necessarily mean that you have become a depressed and bad person. It may actually be that you have “just” pushed yourself too much and you might already be burned out. Often, many people do not even realize that are on their way to a burn out. If you are not sure you definitely should read on.
Burnout, stress, adrenal fatigue .. It goes by many names, and it is a subject very close to my heart since I’ve been through it myself. I once suffered from chronic stress but I did not realize until very late in the process. Actually our bodies are incredible at fighting and standing up to much – but not all! There is a limit to all of us. I learned that on my own body when I for a long time felt tired, had no energy, I looked unhealthy, I lost my periods, I got break outs, bad memory and felt easily irritable. Something I once never felt. Was it me changing to a worser person? No, I was getting burned out. Read more about my story HERE.

How do you get burned out?

Burnout occurs when we experience prolonged stress. That being said I am not saying that stress in itself is dangerous. As human beings we are designed to secrete extra stress hormones when we need extra energy. This was once incredibly useful when we had to run from a dangerous tiger. Our stress reactions are intended to be activated briefly in emergency situations. The problem with stress happens today because our world looks quite different. We no longer stress about running from a dangerous animal but instead we stress about long traffic jams, quarrels with the partner, duties, long working hours, exams, too little sleep, grief and difficult children.

Do you know if you’re burned out?

Our stress mechanisms are controlled by hormones. The most well-known stress hormone, cortisol, is released during stress. Cortisol provides energy and makes you able to run fast. When you are stressed for a long time, your body is constantly trying to secrete extra cortisol. After a while the cortisol production is not able to keep up and you will end up burning out. This is also called adrenal fatigue.
Being chronically stressed is something that many people are not aware about. Your body actually gets used to be in this state of constant stress, and for a long time, it even feels quite good with extra energy etc. This means that a burnout creeps up on you in different stages.
In the beginning it might even feel good because you are filled with extra energy due to elevated cortisol levels.
Quickly you begin to depend a lot on caffeine, energy drinks and sugar in order to combat the day.
Then your sleep starts to be affected. You sleep badly and too little. You lie awake and have troubles falling asleep, because your mind is running around. You generally begins to have difficulties unwinding your thoughts and worries.
You start to become irritable. Your memory gets worse, and you think that most people around you are annoying.
THEN you will be burned out. Here you experience disease and symptoms. For example, I experienced the before mentioned symptoms: chaos in my hormones, ovarian cysts and lack of periods (read more about this HERE).
Read this post and get tips on how to overcome stress and burnout.
