Many Suffer From Unhealthy Health – What About You?

– Scroll down for English version –

Do you live a “healthy life” full of healthy food and exercise but still experience break-outs, fatigue, bad mood and troubles losing weight? Perhaps it is because you leave out some important aspects of your health. Weight loss, health and happiness is possible when you manage to include all. Read and learn about when your healthy lifestyle actually makes you unhealthy and obstruct the results.

First, what is health then?
Is health equal to a specific number of carrots and miles on the treadmill? No, I think not. Is health “just” equal to the absence of diseases? No, I do not think either. Because it is possible to be physically healthy without being happy.
To me, health is far more than what it says on the weight scale, or how many burpees I can do. Crucial to my feeling of health is the presence of well-being, enjoyment, freedom, happiness, laughter and joy – and of course it is also an important factor to me that I feel comfortable in my own skin and that like what I see in the mirror, since that contribute to my happiness too. But my point is simply that it is far from the only one.
An unhealthy health ideal
To many people a healthy lifestyle gets unhealthy when they only measure their health from their looks, diet and exercise. I know all about it, because once I measured my health this way too. I think the reason for this misguided health perception is very much due to our society’s health ideal, which often is a slender ideal. In my view, this ideal is not health. If you scroll, for example, through Facebook and Instagram, you will quickly get the perception that health is equal to a slim waistline, six-pack, lots of hours in the gym and gluten free food ..
The modern health perception is therefore in my view joy-killing (thus health-killing) as it creates high and unrealistic anticipations for your appearance and looks, which can make the health journey both exhausting and draining. It can be very hard to feel pretty and good enough, which can cause many to think that they must eat even healthier or run even longer to reach the ideal. But when the goal is a perfect and unrealistic ideal? Yes, then we are all doomed to fail. This way the health journey quickly becomes a a direct way to low self-esteem, fatigue, stress, lack of pleasure – it becomes unhealthy health.
If your are not happy you are not healthy
In addition to the fact that the society’s health ideal in itself leads many to feel inadequate and unhappy, they also fight so hard and bravely to reach it consumes too much of their time. All the time they need to cook healthy dishes, go for long runs and exercise in the gym takes away time from all other (very important!) elements of health. Besides movement and healthy nutrition, activities that create joy, togetherness and peace, are a huge part of your health. Being social with your friends and family, relaxation, long walks, dinners, parties, yoga, meditation, kisses and hugs creates well-being, enjoyment, happiness and reduces stress. In other words, these activities makes you healthy! In my view, the optimal health is managing a healthy balance between exercise, healthy nutrition, socializing and other things that feels good and make you happy.
Not sure how healthy you are?
If you are not sure, ask yourself how happy you are. And here I mean the real and lasting kind of happiness (read more about this HERE). Presence/absence of happiness is our most effective way to measure our own health. Are not you happy? Then you are not healthy.
I think it’s so sad that many people actually really try and almost do live up to the crazy high health ideal (which is incredibly impressive) without knowing that they are actually not moving towards more health or happiness – more like the contrary. I recognize this, because once this was my reality (read more about this HERE).
My healthy health
Obviously I am not able to ignore the influence from today’s health ideal, and for me it is still a challenge to be inspired by all the good advice on the market without letting them become more obligations and burdens. And yes, I do care about looking good because self-confidence is important to my happiness. However, it has taken me long to realize that the most effective way to become beautiful is a side effect of happiness – not vice versa!
Optimally, I balance all the aspects of health; healthy diet, exercise and activities that make me happy. But when the time is short? Then I no longer skip wonderful moments with my friends but rather a training session. This makes me the most happy – and thus the most healthy.
Therefore, my healthy lifestyle involves much more than healthy eating and training. Socializing, meditation, yoga, long calm walks, chocolate, going out, hugs and kisses are all key elements of my health. They all fuel my happiness thus my health. Am I happy? Then I am healthy too.
My best health advice
If you really want to be lean and healthy, then my point is not to give up. Because it is possible to be both slim and healthy. As you start to realize I to this day I spend less time on my training and more time on happy moments but I actually get better results than before. For example, my skin is a lot prettier and my fat burn is a lot more effective!
Maybe you need to change your direction like me? Forget all about “If I just loose some weight I’ll be a lot more happy”. Change your attitude towards health and body. Target happiness instead of weight loss and you will start to lose weight. Trust me, I’ve tried it myself. Because when you start to become more happy you will have less stress hormones in your body (these make your body gain weight), you will not have the need to eat comfort food and you will not end up in a binge. All this happens because you start to be in balance and start to listen to your body’s actual needs. Whether it is about a glass of wine, chocolate, going for a run or eating an apple your body starts to know how to moderate and prioritize according to your needs. Happiness makes you healthy and beautiful – it is NOT the other way around.
