How to Avoid The Perfection Trap

– Scroll down for English version –

Do you ever feel unhealthy, fat, wrong, lazy or just not good enough? It can be difficult (no, impossible!) to live up to society’s health ideal, and today you get my best advice on how to avoid ending up in what I like to call “the perfection trap”.

Have you ever run a marathon, or two?
Do you have a six-pack?
Do you eat both organic and gluten-free?
No?
I think that society’s health ideal is getting out of proportions. And do not misunderstand me. I think it is very impressive when someone completes a marathon or manage to prioritize health very highly. But no one is capable of doing everything at once! It makes me sad when this “super human ideal” cause us to feel wrong, unhealthy, lazy, fat or just not good enough. Well at least I know that feeling… But hours and hours on the treadmill or sugar-free weekends have never made me happy. What about you?
I sometimes get sky high expectations to myself. It’s hard work trying to be both a master chef, fitness queen, fashionista, a good girlfriend and environmentalist all at the same time – PLUS also have to go to work and/or study.
I’m sorry how this unrealistic ideal makes us chase “perfection”. Something that does not even exist. A chase, then, that from the beginning is set to fail.
Avoid “the perfection trap”. For me, the key is to make a “reality-check” every now and then. That means that I use my realistic sense. Is the health ideal even realistic and possible to reach? No! Should I try to reach an impossible goal? No! It makes a world of difference to my expectations and demands on myself when I actively remind myself of what is reality and what is an illusion. I live healthily – most of the time. I work out 2-3 times a week. I eat chocolate and cake during weekends – and sometimes on a Monday too. And that’s okay. That’s how it is realistic for me. That’s how I’m happy. How about you?
